Mr. Lawrence Lau is the founder and Executive Director of Yellow Sand Capital （Australia）and Yellow Sand Consulting (China, Singapore). Lawrence graduated from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) in 1992 with a Bachelor of Business and gained his MBA in 2004 with Deakin University. He is a Fellow CPA (Aust) member and has over 25 years of experience in finance, corporate strategies, acquisition and consulting in the Asia Pacific region. His industrial experiences span across manufacturing, consumer goods, advance materials and renewable energy. Prior to that he was the Head of Finance of Owens Corning Building Materials Asia Pacific and held various senior positions in KPMG Consulting, L’Oreal, Mary Kay and General Motors.
Lawrence is active in outdoor sports. He recently completed the International EMBA/MBA Cross Desert Challenge in June in the Wulanbuqi Desert (The Red Bull Desert in Mongolian) in Inner Mongolia. The Cross Desert Challenge is a grueling 60km race which competitors must complete in 2 days under intensive desert heat over 36 Degree Celsius. He also participated in the Asia Pacific Business Schools 2 day 42km Glacier Race in Siberia, Russia during winter and the Asia Pacific Business Schools 3 day 70km Desert Race in Tengger Desert, China. With his first desert crossing experience the Simpson Desert in 1991, these challenges over the years taught Lawrence valuable lessons such as how to be humble, respect nature, love the environment and most importantly how to work with others effectively to be successful.
With regards to his professional involvements, Lawrence was one of the founding members and served as the 2nd term President of the CPA Australia Shanghai branch. He is an early advocate of “Finance-Business Partnership” and was elected as Chairman of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) committee in CPA (Aust) Shanghai in 2007. He is active in the Australian business community in China and served as the Honorary Advisor to the board of AustCham Shanghai between 2010 and 2013. In recognition of his various contributions in the accounting profession, he received the inaugural award, as the sole winner in the Banking & Finance sector, from the Australian Chinese Alumni Association in 2009.
Lawrence currently sits on the USQ Alumni Advisory Board and actively participates in the alumni network in China. He also established the first Deakin University Alumni chapter in China in 2012 and served as the 1st President for 3 years. He is a frequent speaker at CFO events and universities.
