  • Xuxu(Tony) Zhuang - Co-Founder, Motion Global Ltd.

Winner of - IDP Education - Australia China Alumni Award for ICT and New Media

    University of Technology Sydney Alumnus

    Shanghai based

University of Technology Sydney alumnus Tony Zhuang is an innovator and e-commerce entrepreneur. As Co-Founder and Managing Director of Motion Global, one of the largest designer eyewear e-commerce companies in the world, he is leading an online eyewear revolution.

In 2006, Zhuang and two friends hatched a plan to start a business. All from vastly different backgrounds, they united behind a single goal: to create a socially minded global company to deliver pioneering value, range and service in an industry where consumers traditionally purchased offline. In this process, they also wanted to fight poverty in some of the world’s poorest communities by providing free prescription glasses. With no money or funding but with infinite stores of passion and complimentary corporate expertise, they started from scratch in each of their bedrooms from Australia, Sweden and Shanghai. Working part-time jobs to support their living and not getting much sleep, they founded Motion Global.

Today Motion Global powers the SmartBuyGlasses Optical Group, a global e-commerce leader in the designer eyewear industry with 150 employees operating in 15 languages across 30 countries worldwide. With the introduction of market-leading augmented reality “Virtual Try-On” Software, people can now ‘Try-On’ the best-selling designer brands in the comfort of their own homes using their webcam.

Motion Global has been recognised for the past two years at the Australia China Business Awards. In 2014 they won the Entrepreneurial Award and in 2015 they received the Business Excellence Award for Business Innovation.

Motion Global was one of the early adopters to the online eyewear market, originally focusing on the Australian market with the brand in 2006. Since then, and under the innovative leadership of Zhuang, the company has developed a significant global presence, with strong growth in the Chinese market. Furthermore, the company’s commitment to international diversity via its e‐Marketing Institute has helped it to establish an international work environment with employees from over 30 countries.

Motion Global maintains a strong commitment to social justice and fighting poverty through its innovative, socially minded entrepreneurial culture, demonstrated by the company’s ”Buy One Give One” social movement. Through this program, glasses are donated to developing countries in Africa and Asia. In collaboration with ‘UNITE FOR SIGHT’ and other partners, the company recently reached a donation milestone having provided over $2 million worth of free eyeglasses to developing countries. This figure equates to over 78,000 lives positively impacted.

Tony is also a strong ambassador for Australian education. He supported UTS alumni activities by participating as a panelist in the 2016 alumni reunion to talk about entrepreneurship and innovation, which inspired hundreds of fellow graduates.

Tony’s innovative, inclusive and international approach to business make him a perfect candidate for this award and his concern for social justice makes him an outstanding ambassador and role model for UTS and all Australian universities.
